CONNECTING OUR INNOVATION WITH THE PRIVATE SECTOR FOR PUBLIC GOOD

From Apollo to GPS to the internet, the U.S. government has been a global innovation leader. Today, that position is being challenged in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, microelectronics, 5G, and advanced telecommunications. To address these challenges, MITRE created the Accelerator to incubate technology with the private sector through MITRE Engenuity—a trusted tech foundation for public good.

The Accelerator and Engenuity fast-track innovation with the private sector and create a bridge to MITRE’s work. Coupled with the work of MITRE Labs, these entities increase our impact through new business models, disruptive innovation, and research and development. Our work helps to safeguard intellectual property from cyber threats, protect critical infrastructure, and promote economic development and breakthrough innovation.

As Laurie Giandomenico, MITRE’s chief acceleration officer, explains, “We’re working to transform industries and develop global standards. And this often requires forming collaborations among companies that typically compete against each other.”

MITRE Engenuity’s Center for Threat-Informed Defense launched with 20 organizations, including Bank of America, Microsoft, Fujitsu, Siemens, Verizon, and AttackIQ. The center conducts research to inform threat-informed defense strategies and has a public library of adversary emulation plans that enable defenders to replicate tactics and techniques used by known cyber adversaries.

In 2020, MITRE Engenuity’s ATT&CK® Evaluations team worked with 30 companies, including Microsoft, Cisco, FireEye, and CrowdStrike, to assess their cybersecurity products against adversaries that have stolen more than $1 billion across retail and financial services businesses over the past five years. These evaluations also help government and industry tailor their defenses. The evaluations program expanded its scope to address products that protect industrial control systems, including energy plants, oil refineries, and transportation systems.

MITRE Engenuity and the Accelerator created the Open Generation 5G consortium to bring together government, industry, and academia to make democratic societies more competitive in 5G, with an initial focus on drones. This includes building a technical roadmap, formulating a standards strategy, and devising experimentation to inform policy with Nokia, Ericsson, Verizon, and others. This R&D spans U.S.-based test ranges, including MITRE’s 5G testbed.

Looking ahead, the Accelerator and MITRE Engenuity will address health-related challenges, including keeping assisted living facilities safer during pandemics and applying artificial intelligence to help clinicians predict the onset of diseases earlier—when treatment options are more effective and less expensive. The Accelerator and MITRE Engenuity are also developing a microelectronics strategy that will protect the U.S. semiconductor supply chain.

Through these new pathways, MITRE is expanding our impact in areas that will strengthen our national resilience and deliver on our promise to discover, create, and lead.
